Final Project

For my final project I'm going to continue with the poker theme I started in my political ad. I have already broke down my piece into the three pieces. Like the "Kill My Brother" video, I will have an intro with a kid playing poker and his dad comes around saying, "Don't play poker, it's not good for you..." then fade out. The three options/scenes will be the kid becomes poor/desperate, successful, and religious cause he sees the light.

Randall Packer Presentation

When sitting in the recital hall watching Randall Packers’ performance, looking back at all the scenes one in particular bit of footage stood out greatly; Orf walking up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Background music heard mended perfectly with the situation Orf defined by walking up the steps. To each person I ‘m sure they had their own justification/interpretation of what it meant, but to me it showed a change. Because of his white suit and the camera at a distance, he stood out to show change; like a minority voice amongst the majority. Lincoln represented America’s lack of compassion for the people who are being repressed by current legislation. I believe, not sure if this was on purpose, there were little kids in the way of Orf to stop him from reaching the top. As he walked up, the kids shifted from side to side trying to get out of his way. This signified the turbulence an artist must go through in their attempt to get a message across. Any change that takes place comes from stern dedication and perseverance. Orf walking up the steps symbolized an artist trying to make a difference in today’s society. The children symbolized every little obstacle an artist must overcome for their opinion to be heard and effective to a large audience here in America.

If an artist just wrote a poem about how much he hated George W. Bush, read it to his best friend and their friend hated it, the poet doesn’t just stop and say “damn, I’ll never do anything about this issue.” No, the poet continues to fight, reads his poem to somebody else, and then somebody else, until the word gets out about the changes the poet wants to make. In this scene Orf represented this poet who would never be dissuaded from their cause, and every other artist in the world who wants to express their opinions through “artistic mediations.”

Midtem Essay 2

I believe that the phrase “unscripting the political process” in the sense of common media reflects the ability of anyone to display their perception of current political issues. In class we watched the video of the Yes Men, who showed how absurd some of the high end political officials beliefs are globally. Like I mentioned in the previous blog, no longer can politicians throw anti activist under the rug because their means of producing their beliefs are far too numbered to nullify. If one website goes down, it’s extremely easy to make a new one instantly. With Google and YouTube, the same people who found the first one will find the new one, and therefore nothing actually happened to the activist attempting to reveal their truth about a debated topic.
In most instances, the people shedding light to the fallacies being committed by top politicians are extremely educated artist on the topic. Due to their knowledge of the topic and different lifestyle choice then politicians, these artist reach out to a community that would probably never learn about some of terrible actions/policies out there in the political arena. It’s great to know that a whole new section of society who feels unaffected by political agendas to realize everyone in any nation needs to be aware of current political issues. Politics have an effect on every step of every person within that nation, and people need to know this fact. I’m not saying all artist are oblivious to current political topics, but a few are, and these few, along with many others, learn about the weaknesses of politicians through a different medium with art.

Midterm Essay 1

In the age of YouTube and online demand television shows, sitting in front of a television is soon becoming obsolete. During this break I played golf with a buddy who just got back from Finland for work. Their television shows were terrible and he claimed the only way he kept his “insanity” was online television. Because the internet extends globally, anyone can access any information from anywhere. Such a opportunity seemed unimaginable only decades earlier, but in today’s day and age it changes everything. First off, marketing television shows not only try to attract the viewer to maybe sit in front of the tube, but also compel the viewer to check out the networks webpage where more of their material is readily available day and night.
Not only our major broadcasting stations being effected by this change, but now they are competing with form of media like YouTube. The show Lonely Girl 15 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=dZN-Wye4rDE) has become a popular drama nationwide, possibly globally, and is taking away the attention from many viewers from similar shows broadcasted on the main television networks. With the easy access to a wide audience, being a professional entertainer or just an entertainer is as easy as uploading a video. For example searching on YouTube I found a group of guys who I found hilarious. They seem to be a bunch of college buddies who make videos and put them on YouTube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZJvHAvq397Q). MTV should pay them to make shows on their network because everything they’ve done excels in comparison to any attempt at comedy on MTV I’ve seen recently.
This point brings me to the reasons why YouTube has become so popular. There are no censors to a certain extent. Obviously obscene porn is not available here in the United States, but other than that the limitations are quite low. Because of this fact, people can express themselves without getting the “OK” from corporate offices like every major television station has too. Therefore, one persons vision is that ones persons vision and comes off in the exact manner they want to such a large audience.
Having this large audience in terms of the social and political ramifications means that no area is off limits. There is always someone out there that does not like somebody’s art or political stance, and because of this new age ability to access almost anything, artist and politicians must be ready to defend anything they do. No longer can money buy security from criticism, the spectrum of possible “haters” extends far too wide for anyone to shutdown somebody else’s personal view.


When visiting the first part of the exhibit The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality and the Moving Image the one piece that I personally enjoyed the most was “Up and Away” by Michael Bell-Smith. First things first, I liked how I played a lot of the video games in the piece. The way the screens just flew by one another made my eyes feel as if I was being lifted upward. Even though the screen stays still, the way he designed the intrusion of the next background made my eyes feel like I was dreaming. I don’t quite understand how he did it, however, the visual effect compared to nothing I had ever witnessed before.

Daybreak begins. Brain yearns. Accomplishments recorded. Who will be part of the wall of champions? Next champion awaits in their chair, anxious for their moment to shine. Aspirations still to come.


Entire campus provides opportunity for greatness. Around every corner carries a new challenge. Make America proud.


This is the standard. The motto. The dream. The honor.


DO NOT ENTER! Beyond this door lies the trap. Corrupt authoritative figure that wants failure. She will not succeed. Aspirations still to come.


Loitering between classes. Discussions of possible victories.
"Will you be the next champion?"
"I don't know, will you?"
"I know I will!"


Rooms of knowledge fuel the mind. This hallway ends. This hallway never ends. This hallway opens the future for limitless possibilities.


Having bad day. Hallways too small. Too stuffy. Need some space, fresh air and bright skies to get away. Sanctuary from pressure.


Daydreaming over. Life to live. Pressures will not hinder.
Fuel the body. Aspirations still to come.


Entrance to greatness. Butterflies start to flutter. Nervous to walk through.
What if? WHAT IF?


There's the escape. Just one jump and pressures avoided.
It would be so easy. Run!


Run? No. Never. Stay Strong. Aspirations still to come. Opportunity arises; seized. Crowd goes wild. Champion has arrived. Greatness accomplished.
